Word of Mouth Wines (WOM) established in 2003, is an exciting collaboration between two neighbours with existing vineyards on the slopes of Mt Canobolas at a cool 1000 metres above sea level over looking the township of Orange.
The two vineyards share a common boundary, soil types, climate and rainfall. One was established in the early nineties with traditional varieties of Pinot noir, Cabernet sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Merlot and Riesling. The other was first planted in 1999 with Pinot gris and has since added Viognier giving a total area of 8 hectares under vines, with a further 4-5 hectares to be developed.
Combining the two operations made economic sense, and with the appointment of Lowe Family Wine Company (LFWC) as wine makers melded a perfect synergy of aged vines, great cool climate location, traditional and new varieties with passionate and innovative wine making. The talents of Jane Wilson and David Lowe (LFWC) were quickly evident in the first vintage for the new company in 2003. By 2004 we had made some big changes in the vineyard which had a significant impact on wine quality. Again in 2005 there was another step forward in wine quality with the focus now on crisp dry whites and Pinot noir, with areas planted to Cabernet and Merlot being either replanted or grafted over to more white varieties. The old vines of Cabernet sauvignon planted in 1991 will be retained to make a great long-lived traditional red wine in warmer seasons.
With a clear direction and 3 years experience WOM has had a real impact in the Orange District and has quickly established itself at a national level with several varieties, which is demonstrated in James Halliday’s 4 1/2 star rating and the 2005 Sauvignon blanc scoring 95 /100.
